In Portugal, car inspection (IPO) is mandatory to ensure that vehicles are safe and environmentally compliant.
But many drivers still wonder: when should I take my car for inspection?
1. When to do the first inspection
The timing depends on your vehicle type:
- Passenger cars: first inspection after 4 years from the registration date.
- Commercial vehicles up to 3,500 kg: first inspection after 2 years.
- After that, inspections must be done every year.
Example:
👉 A car registered in July 2021 must have its first inspection in July 2025.
2. Validity period
You can do the inspection up to 3 months before the deadline.
After approval, you’ll get a colored sticker on your windshield showing the month and year of the next inspection.
3. What is checked
The IPO includes checks on:
- Brakes, suspension, and steering
- Lights and indicators
- Tires and emissions
- Seatbelts and chassis condition
If the vehicle has major defects, it will fail and must be reinspected after repairs.
4. Penalties for missing inspection
Driving without a valid inspection is a serious offense.
Fines range from €250 to €1,250, and the car may be seized.
Insurance coverage may also be invalid if your IPO is expired.
5. Where to go
You can have your inspection done at IMT-certified inspection centers across Portugal.
Bring your:
- Vehicle registration document (DUA)
- ID card of the owner
Tip: Schedule your appointment early — inspection centers are busiest in summer months.
