Knowing if a car has insurance is crucial before driving or buying it. In Portugal, every vehicle circulating on public roads must have mandatory third-party liability insurance. Here’s how to check if it’s valid.
1. Check the ASF database
The Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ASF) offers an official online tool to verify vehicle insurance.
Go to the ASF website and enter the license plate number. It will display the insurance company and the policy’s expiry date.

2. Look at the green card
The insurance certificate (known as the carta verde) must always be kept in the vehicle. It includes:
- The insurer’s name
- Policy number
- Vehicle registration number
- Policy validity
Drivers who cannot present it may face fines.
3. Contact the insurer
If you doubt the authenticity of an insurance policy, you can contact the insurance company directly. Provide the policy number or license plate for confirmation.
4. Before buying a used car
When purchasing a used vehicle through platforms such as moto.pt, always check:
- That the insurance is valid
- That there are no major accidents recorded
- That the ownership details are up to date
Requesting a statement from the insurer or checking with the IMT helps avoid legal or financial issues.
5. Penalties and risks
Driving without insurance is a very serious offense in Portugal, punishable by fines up to €2500 and vehicle seizure.
In case of an accident, the driver is fully responsible for all damages.
Tip: Even if your car is not in use but still registered, it must remain insured. You can only suspend insurance after canceling the vehicle registration.
