After buying or registering a vehicle, one of the most common questions is: how long does it take to receive the car registration (DUA)?
In Portugal, this document — known as the Documento Único Automóvel (DUA) — is issued by the IRN (Institute of Registries and Notary Affairs).
1. What is the DUA
The DUA replaces the old “livrete” and title of ownership.
It includes:
- Vehicle registration number and date
- Owner’s name and address
- Technical details (engine size, fuel type, weight, etc.)
- VIN (chassis number)
Since 2020, a digital version of the DUA is also available via the id.gov.pt app.
2. Delivery time
Once your vehicle registration is completed, the physical DUA is sent by post to your registered address.
The average delivery time is 5–10 working days, depending on:
- IRN processing times
- Correctness of the address
- Type of registration (domestic or imported vehicle)
💡 Note: Online registrations via Automóvel Online are usually faster — you may receive your DUA in as little as 3–5 working days.
3. If it doesn’t arrive
If more than 15 working days pass and you still haven’t received your DUA:
- Contact the IRN office or conservatória where you registered the car.
- Check if your address is correct.
- Request a duplicate copy if necessary (subject to a small fee).
4. DUA Digital option
The digital version of the DUA allows you to access the document instantly on your phone via the id.gov.pt app.
It’s valid and legally equivalent to the paper version.
Tip: Always keep a backup (photo or PDF) of your DUA and check the IRN website if delivery takes longer than expected.
