For many years, cars in Portugal displayed several stickers on the windshield, but with digitalization, the rules have changed.
So, in 2025, which stickers are still mandatory?
1. Fewer stickers, more digital systems
Today, most traditional stickers are no longer required.
Police and road authorities now access information directly through digital databases linked to the car’s registration number.
2. Car insurance sticker
The only sticker still mandatory is the car insurance sticker, which proves you have valid third-party liability insurance.
It must be placed on the lower right corner of the windshield (from the driver’s view).
It includes:
- Insurance company
- Policy number
- Vehicle registration
- Expiry date
💡 Fine: driving without displaying the insurance sticker can lead to a €60–€300 fine, even if your policy is valid.
3. Inspection sticker (IPO)
If your vehicle has already undergone its mandatory inspection, the IPO sticker must also be displayed on the upper right corner of the windshield.
It shows the month and year of the next inspection.
Fines for missing or expired stickers range from €250 to €1,250.
4. Stickers no longer required
The following are no longer mandatory in Portugal:
- Road tax (IUC) sticker – now paid online.
- Via Verde device – optional and can be replaced by digital license plate detection.
- Environmental stickers – not required in Portugal (only in some EU cities).
5. Useful advice
- Keep both insurance and inspection stickers visible.
- Replace them if you change the windshield.
- Always have your digital or paper documents available if stopped by police.
