The Mandatory Periodic Inspection (IPO) is one of the most important legal requirements for vehicle maintenance in Portugal. Beyond ensuring that the car meets safety and environmental standards, the inspection follows a strict schedule that every vehicle owner must respect. Although the rules seem simple, many drivers are unsure about how often the car needs to be inspected.
Below is a clear and comprehensive overview of the inspection intervals for standard passenger vehicles.
1. First inspection: after 4 years
Every new car registered in Portugal does not need to undergo inspection for the first four years.
The first IPO must be carried out at the end of the 4th year after the initial registration date.
This initial exemption exists because new cars present lower mechanical risk and more stable emissions during the first years of use.
2. Between the 4th and 8th year: every 2 years
After the first inspection, the car must be inspected every two years.
This means inspections must take place in:
- the 6th year
- the 8th year
During this period, the vehicle still presents moderate wear, and a biennial check is sufficient to assess safety systems, brakes, suspension, emissions and general condition.
3. After 8 years: annual inspection
Once the vehicle is over 8 years old, the frequency changes.
From this point onwards, the inspection must be carried out every year, without exceptions for light passenger vehicles.
The justification is straightforward:
older cars have a higher probability of mechanical failures affecting braking, steering, emissions, corrosion and structural stability. Annual inspection ensures the vehicle remains safe for road use.
4. Why respecting the deadlines matters
Failing to carry out the IPO on time can lead to several consequences:
Fines
Driving with an expired inspection is considered a serious offence and may result in significant fines.
Vehicle immobilisation
In more serious cases, authorities can order the vehicle to be immobilised if it is deemed unsafe.
Insurance issues
If a car without a valid inspection is involved in an accident, the insurer may refuse coverage, especially if technical failure is suspected.
Resale value
A complete inspection history increases the credibility and market value of the vehicle.
5. How to check your inspection date
The deadline is indicated in the Vehicle Registration Document (DUA) and on the IPO sticker displayed on the windshield.
Most inspection centres also send reminders by SMS or email.
Many owners choose to mark the inspection date on their phone calendar or check it routinely to avoid delays.
The inspection schedule for passenger vehicles in Portugal is straightforward:
- First inspection: after 4 years
- From 4 to 8 years: every 2 years
- After 8 years: every year
Following this schedule is essential to ensure road safety, avoid fines and keep the car legally compliant and in proper condition.
